Healthy aging

Understanding healthy aging, and what care can look like.

Muscle, sleep, hormone output, skin and metabolism all change with the decades, and most of those changes are measurable. Healthy aging care is handled the way any other area of medicine is handled: history, labs where they are useful, then a clinician's decision about what, if anything, is appropriate.

Preventive care, explained

What a preventive health check covers.

A preventive check is a set of measurements taken while you feel well, so changes can be noticed early. It is ordinary medicine, and what it covers depends on age, history and sex.

Bloodwork

Bloodwork

Bloodwork often includes blood sugar, cholesterol and other blood fats, kidney and liver function, a blood count and, where there is a reason for it, thyroid function. Each result is read against the reference range for age and sex. A number outside the range is a reason to look closer, not a diagnosis.

Blood pressure

Blood pressure

The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care recommends blood pressure be measured at all appropriate primary care visits. One high reading is not usually enough to diagnose high blood pressure. A pattern across several readings, taken properly, is what the clinician uses to decide whether follow-up is needed.

Screening by age

Screening by age

The Task Force sets age ranges for cancer screening. Colorectal screening is recommended from 50 to 74. Mammograms are recommended from 50 to 74. In the forties it is an individual decision made with a clinician. Cervical screening is recommended from 25 to 69. A clinician checks which apply and points you to the provincial program.

What the clinician does

What the clinician does with it

The clinician reads the results together, alongside your history and any medications. Many results need nothing beyond a note and a repeat at the next check. Some lead to a conversation, a referral to a family doctor or specialist, or a repeat test sooner. Nothing is prescribed from a screen alone.

A licensed Canadian clinician decides which of these apply to you at the assessment. Start free assessment

Your plan

Built around your assessment, not a menu.

An assessment looks at the whole picture. Your clinician decides what, if anything, is appropriate, and nothing is chosen before your history is reviewed.

Your clinician decides whether a prescription is appropriate at all. A prescription is never guaranteed.

Before anything is decided

What the assessment covers.

Aging is not a condition, and no clinic can turn it back. What changes with age is measurable, and Canadian screening guidance says what is worth checking when. Here is what an assessment covers.

  1. 01

    Your history, in full

What you have been told before, the conditions in your family, the medications you already take, and what has changed recently.

  2. 02

    Labs, where they are useful

Blood work is arranged when it will change the decision rather than as a formality, and your clinician explains what they are looking at.

  3. 03

    Screening by age

Canadian guidance sets out what is worth checking in each decade. Your clinician works within it rather than around it.

  4. 04

    What happens next

A clinician licensed in your province reviews everything and decides what, if anything, is appropriate. Some plans include no prescription at all.

Your 40s

Muscle strength tends to ease gradually from the 40s on. Blood pressure is measured at every appropriate visit. Cholesterol and blood sugar are checked based on your history.

The numbers, plainly

Did you know?

A few numbers about Canada, and about how many people are in the same place as you.

Grip strength

Age 40

Grip strength in Canadians peaks around 40, then eases gradually for everyone.

Same for every Canadian past 40.

Vitamin D in winter

The share of Canadians low on vitamin D more than doubles in winter, to 13 percent.

The seasons move everyone’s numbers.

At 65, Canadians could expect another 15.3 years in good health in 2023.

Understanding healthy aging

What changes, and why it is measurable.

Aging is not one thing. It is a set of gradual shifts in different systems, and most of them show up in places a clinician can look: a history, an examination and, where useful, blood work.

Screening guidance exists, and it is age-based.

The Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care publishes guidance on which screening tests are recommended at which ages. A healthy aging assessment works from that kind of guidance, not from a trend, and it starts with the same questions any thorough clinician would ask.

Healthy aging 101

It is healthy aging care: understanding what changes with age and, where a clinician judges it appropriate, treating what can be treated. Aging itself is not a condition, no clinic can turn it back, and we will never tell you otherwise.

That depends entirely on your assessment. A licensed Canadian clinician reviews your history and any lab work and decides what, if anything, is appropriate. Some plans include no prescription at all.

Sometimes. Labs are requested when they will change the plan, and your clinician explains what they are looking at and why.

Your plan

Every prescription option has potential side effects, and screening is taken seriously here. Your clinician reviews your full history before anything is prescribed, and follows up on a schedule afterward. Anything hormone-related is monitored with blood work.

Some programs are not prescribed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for people with a history of hormone-sensitive cancer, or alongside certain conditions and medications. Your clinician screens for all of this at assessment, and if something is not appropriate for you, it is not prescribed.

No. Your assessment is reviewed by a clinician licensed in your province, and everything except any blood draw happens online.

Practical

Curo serves patients across Canada. You are matched with a clinician licensed in your province, and delivery is free anywhere in Canada.
